We are so proud to have many employees whose careers have grown alongside the company itself. The loyalty, knowledge and experience built over years of service are a vital part of our success, and few people represent this better than Contracts Manager, Steve Phillips, who is now celebrating an impressive 25 years with the business.
Steve first joined the company as a carpenter, working on what was then a newly secured maintenance contract with Total. From those early days on site, he steadily developed his skills and responsibilities, progressing to Site Manager before stepping into the role of Contracts Manager, where he now oversees many of the company’s largest and most complex projects.
Before joining Premier Forecourts and Construction, Steve worked as a self-employed carpenter, specialising in loft conversions across local residential projects — experience that laid the practical foundations for a long and successful career in the industry.
Over the past quarter of a century, Steve has built an extensive range of technical knowledge and gained numerous industry qualifications, adapting alongside both the company and an ever-changing sector.
Reflecting on what has kept him motivated throughout his career, Steve said:
“No two projects are ever the same, and that’s what has always kept the job interesting. There are challenges every day — some tougher than others — but that’s also what makes it rewarding. The variety of work and the support from the directors and colleagues over the years have made it a great place to build a career.”
During his 25 years with the company, Steve has played a key role in delivering a wide range of significant projects. Among those he is most proud of are major re-pump works and tank installations, the UK Synergy rebranding programme for Esso, the refuelling installation at Aston Martin’s St Athan facility, and more recently, involvement in Motor Fuel Group’s expanding EV infrastructure programme.
Steve added:
“Looking back, it’s the range of projects and the people I’ve worked with that stand out most. The industry has changed hugely since I started, and it’s been rewarding to be part of projects that have helped shape that progress.”
When asked whether he would recommend a career in the industry, Steve is enthusiastic:
“I’d absolutely recommend it. It can be demanding at times, but it’s incredibly varied and satisfying work. You’re constantly learning, solving problems and seeing real results from what you do.”
Having witnessed significant changes across the sector during his time with the company, Steve recognises that the pace of change is only accelerating — particularly with the transition toward electric vehicles.
“The move towards electric vehicles is transforming the industry. We’re already heavily involved in EV charger installations for multiple clients, and that will only continue to grow. As a company, we’ve always adapted to change, and that’s what will keep us moving forward in the future.”
As Steve marks 25 years with Premier Forecourts and Construction, his journey reflects not only personal commitment and progression, but also the strength of experience and teamwork that continues to drive the company forward.
